AI Case Brief Writer For Law Students / Professors

Project Overview

WGMI Labs took on the challenge of creating a Web SaaS application specifically for law students, aimed at streamlining their case briefing and exam preparation process.

Challenges

One of the main challenges was developing a responsive case briefs tool. This feature needed to let users input a case name and receive a detailed, tailored case brief with options for personal adjustments. Another hurdle was creating a critique tool for case briefs and outlines.

This was essential for giving students annotated feedback on their work, helping them improve their legal analysis and writing skills.

Developing the large language model (LLM) that powers these features posed its own set of challenges. The LLM needed to be robust, accurate, and capable of processing complex legal information.

This required advanced technical skills and a deep understanding of legal education and the needs of law students. Additionally, refining the dataset for the LLM's training was a significant task. The team had to ensure that the data used was relevant, comprehensive, and aligned with the legal education curriculum.

Solutions

In response, we developed a responsive case brief tool that lets users input a case name and receive a comprehensive case brief. This feature is designed to be highly user-friendly, allowing for customization according to the user's specific needs.

For the critique tool, we created a system where students can upload their work and receive annotated feedback. This feedback is crucial in helping students understand legal concepts better and improve their case briefing skills. The development of the LLM was a pivotal aspect of this project.

Conclusion

The team successfully built a model trained on a carefully curated dataset, ensuring it could handle the intricacies of legal language and case law effectively.

To tackle challenges in data handling and training, we employed advanced data processing techniques, ensuring the LLM was trained on a dataset that was both high-quality and relevant to the needs of law students.

As a result, our tools not only addressed the immediate challenges faced by students but also set a new standard for legal education technology, empowering students with the resources they need to excel in their studies and future careers.
